Au mois de mars, après quelques illustrations « mineures », j'ai commencé à poser les jalons du prochain herbier de ma série par l'entremise de deux pièces marquantes : la première, une boucle d'oreille d'une bijoutière bien connue pour ses pièces sombres et ésotériques, Bloodmilk. Ace of Swords, une épée stylisée issue du tarot et particulièrement réminescente pour moi d'un pan chevaleresque du destin de ma Belyer. La seconde, la magnifique et hors de ma portée robe Vegoia d'inspiration médiévale de la marque lolita indé lolita I Do Declare, tout particulièrement choisie pour ses longues manches évasées.

In march of this year I was craving for more elaborate illustrations than the bits and bob I had had under my brushes for the past few months, not to mention my eagerness to get through my herbaria serie as it's taking so long I almost fear that I'm never seeing the end of it. Two special items got me started: one of them was an earring (singular) by goth favourite Bloodmilk. It's called Ace of Swords, a stylized sword from the Tarot imagery, and for me a nod to my own part-time knight Belyer. The other piece was the magnificient yet out of my reach Vegoia dress by indie lolita brand I Do Declare, noteworthy for its long flared sleeves.

Un peu plus tard en avril, alors que j'étais en vacances en Bretagne, j'ai emmené cet herbier dans l'espoir de faire sur place quelques trouvailles autrement plus verdoyantes et dans l'esprit de mon sujet que ce que je pouvais espérer glaner dans les Bouches-du-Rhone — du moins, sans avoir à fournir des efforts démesurés pour accéder à ce qui abonde dans le reste de la France. Et de fait, inutile d'aller bien loin : les pierres du jardin regorgeaient de lierre.

Some time later in april, as I was holydaying in Brittany, I brought along this herbarium in the hope that I would find some inspiration there, as everything was greener and overall more suited to my subject than anything nature has to offer in my current state, Bouches-du-Rhones (Marseille hinterland) — unless one is prepared to go to great lengths to get their hands on what is otherwise very common everywhere else in France. Indeed I needn't seek very far: the ivy leaves I wanted were just there, in the garden.

Cet herbier compte trois bijoux, et étonnament tous des pièces que j'ai la chance de compter parmi ma — maigre — collection. J'ai déniché sur Etsy une bague ancienne qui serait datée du XVe ou XVIe siècle. Quant au collier, le coup de foudre fut immédiat pour cette charoite magique sertie par Lorliaswood sous le nom de La Couleur Tombée du Ciel. Lorsque dans l'intervalle nécessaire à la livraison de cette commande la créatrice a illustré ses bijoux pour accompagner une vente spéciale dédiée aux bois, j'ai dû me faire violence pour ne pas révéler que j'étais également sur le coup !

This herbarium has a count of no less than three jewels, unseemingly all part of my quite limited collection. On Etsy I found an ancient ring dating back to the XVth to XVIth century. As to the necklace, it was love at first sight for this magical charoite set by Lorliaswood, taking its name from Lovecraft's story The Colour Out of Space. It was very hard for me to not blurt out what I was up to when as my order was still being proceeded the creator launched a special spring collection dedicated to the woods for which she illustrated each piece to send along!

Pour la première fois, je me suis filmée en train de travailler. Enfin… pas pendant l'étape de l'aquarelle, désolée, mais j'ai pu immortaliser mes premiers pas avec la dorure à la feuille. J'ai assemblé le tout dans un timelapse d'une minute qui s'il ne couvre pas tout le procédé de A à Z en raison de contraintes techniques, en montre du moins une bonne partie, y compris la sous-couche au gesso. Pour ceux que cela intéresse, j'avais le choix entre me procurer un mixion, une substance qui reste un peu collante quelques heures, ou un gesso à laisser sécher et à réchauffer à l'haleine juste avant d'appliquer la feuille. Comme j'ai l'habitude de devoir fréquemment interrompre mon activité du moment en faveur d'une autre plus urgente, ou d'un voyage, j'ai opté pour la seconde solution.

For the first time ever I recorded myself while working. Well, not until the watercolour was already completed, my apologies, but at least I got my first forays into gilding. I put together a minute-long timelapse video covering most parts of the process — I wasn't able to record *everything* due to some technical constraints, but I still have plenty, including the first step: applying a gesso underlayer. For those interested, I was presented with two choices: either mixion, a substance that will remain sticky for a couple hours, or gesso, which you apply beforehand and let dry, and which later requires to be breathed upon right before applying the gold leaf. As someone whose work is frequently interrupted by some other, more urgent work, when I'm not claimed for by the travel bug, I opted for the second proposal, so I needn't worry about not being able to work in one single sitting.

Et parce que pendant un temps, l'herbier oscillait entre thème médiéval et thème breton, je vais encore rallonger ce post avec une très écrémée sélection d'images parmi mes pérégrinations bretonnes de ce printemps.

For a time I couldn't make up my mind whether Brittany or the Middle Age was to be the main theme of this herbarium, so as a tribute to that much beloved although discarded place, I will fill up this post to the brim with even more pictures, an ‘abridged’ overview of my last time there in the spring.
